Russian Firms ‘Lead Bribe List’

Companies from the emerging economies of China and Russia are more likely to take bribes when doing business in other countries, a survey states of 2,742 senior business executives. Other countries that faired poorly were Mexico, India, and Italy. Belgium and Canada were the least likely to take bribes; the United States raked ninth on the list.

The Bribe Paying Index, or BPI, has shown that companies located in major exporting countries use bribes to win business in other countries, even though it can have detrimental effects on the reputations of the company or the community. Russia, India, and China are countries who have not signed the OECD’s convention against bribery. Russia’s President has said “corruption in his country is a threat to national security.”

This is very interesting. It is also very interesting that people seem to think that there is so corruption in underdeveloped countries (especially in Africa) and yet they are nowhere near the top.

One large point in Jeffery Sach's book End of Poverty is actually that corruption in underdeveloped nations has been indicated to as an easy and dismissable explanation of the problems of underdevelopment when really it has no significant consequence.
