Hudson Yards, On Track at Last

In the article published in the New York times, they discuss the growth and development finally taking place after what seemed to be the disappointing area of Hudson Yard. Now the area is seeing substantial growth and development and thousands of new apartments are being built. The going rate for the rental market there is roughly 100 per square foot in some of the new lavished apartments. This looks like a positive sign to see a rebound in the housing market taking place.

The h1n1 virus has spread from mainland China to former province of Taiwan, amid mounting distrust of China, widely seen as the agressor. Taiwan has now spread the travel advisory to the 10th city/province of China, putting out level-2 travel advisories. H1N1 is the human version of the bird flu, and has been limited to China since the first documented case. This is an extremely deadly version of the flu, known for showing very few symptoms and having a death rate of about 90%. This puts strain on the already strained relationship between China and Taiwan, and could force other nations to take sides in a conflict they really didn't want to get involved in. This could also definitely lead to travel and trade restrictions with these nations and the rest of the world. Global outbreaks of H1N1 would be disastrous to infrastructure in the new global economy.

Jobless Claims Fall

Amidst gloomy economic news that has swirled around the first quarter, the number of unemployment claims is lower than what was predicted for last week. Unemployment claim numbers can be inconsistent week to week, but over time they are one of the better predictors of the strength of the job market. Last week they were 339,000 for first-time filers, which is down from 355,000 the week prior and at half of what it was at the peak of the financial crisis in 2009 (670,000). Second-time or more filers still is at about 3 million which indicates that companies haven't turned to boosting hiring, but at least they are not laying off more workers. Analyzing this trend points towards a hopeful shift to the economy continuing its resilient growth in 2013.

Spain revises down its economic forecast

Spain’s government is worried that the level of contraction this year might be worse than predicted. In the beginning of 2013 Spain had the highest unemployment in its history – 27.2%. The government does not expect any major improvements in this until next year. The government is now aiming to cut income tax in 2005 as a stimulus measure in order to improve the economy.  Spain had violent anti-austerity protests and some people were suspected of planning to burn down a bank. These protests were mainly because of the reports that showed the increase in unemployment and especially unemployment among youth which is 57.2%. The labor laws in Spain have been reformed so it’s easier to hire and fire workers.

This article states that the youth in the economy are having a tough time finding work in this economy still even though it seems that the economy is getting better. It says that there has been a 30 percent rise in unemployment in the 15 to 24 range of people since 2007 which means that even though the economy is getting better young people are still having a hard time finding work. They also said idleness in the economy is leading to people being out of work later in life. people who don't find work early in their lives have a tougher time finding it as the economy moves on and they get older. This economy is performing well but it is stil hard for people to find work.

Chemical Weapons In Syria

This video from The Economist's website discusses reports that the Syrian Army has been using nerve agents against its opponents over the last few weeks.  President Obama has said that the use of chemical weapons could be the last straw that might pull America into the situation somehow , however to what degree is not clear. Certainly, getting involved in another foreign country would have a large opposition given the failures of the U.S in Iraq and Afghanistan.
