Trump says He Will Declare National Energy Emergency

In his inaugural address, Trump said he will declare a national energy emergency with the goal of fighting inflation. With this action, he is aiming to increase fossil fuel production and ultimately withdraw the United States from international commitments to combat climate change. In combination, Trump also promised to revoke what he described as the "electric vehicle mandate." Trump is also citing the AI race with China and the need to stay at the forefront of global technology as a reason for the declaration of a national emergency.

With this promise of a declaration of a national energy emergency, many questions remain unanswered. The Trump Administration has promised to cut energy costs in half within the first year of his administration, which sounds like a large task to undertake. It will be interesting to see if Trump has these capabilities along with what possible repercussions there could be for the global climate in the short run and in the very long run.

I wonder if he can actually drill in the Gulf of Mexico. This is the first time I have heard of the AI race versus China. what will the repercussions of that race be economically?

From what I have been reading about AI, some of these goals seem to be directly eating into each other. The higher utilization of AI is going to require a lot of energy. I also feel uneasy about what it means for our global relations when we just decide to withdraw from commitments. International law means nothing but our word and when there's nothing else enforcing it, I feel it really shows how much our word is really worth.

I think this is the effect of having an extremely old and aging government on both sides. They do not have to take the long-run into consideration, but rather just focus on the next four years. It is not completely apparent but climate change could have extreme ramifications, just not when these people are still around.

Trump's plan to revoke the "electric vehicle mandate" leaves our energy situation in an interesting place. It might boost oil and gas production but slow down the shift to electric cars and renewable energy. Interestingly, this stance seems at odds with Trump's relationship with Elon Musk, a major figure in the EV industry. It'll be fascinating to see how their close alliance might influence future EV policies.

I feel like this race is directly connected to us leaving global organizations. It seems to me like they don't want to share our knowledge and resources with competitors that are also in their committees that we are leaving.
