Chinese authorities in the eastern city of Xintai have been “abducting citizens who make complaints.” The people who are abducted are taken to mental hospitals and some of them are forced to take powerful drugs. They are detained until they withdraw the statements. There have been eighteen reported cases.
Most of the complaints stem form land disputes with the state. Human rights groups have accused China for forcing people in mental hospitals for quite some time. Some have been imprisoned for years, never receiving a proper trial.

This is more evidence of a comment I made early in a reference to China. It was about their 586 billion stimulus package. I stated that China's biggest problems remain (despite all that has happened economically) political.
This is crazy! How can the government be allowed to do this. I guess they probably aren't technically allowed the question becomes how can the government get caught doing this? My guess is that the US probably does similar things but at least they never get caught (not that it justifies it)
The United States has developed much more sophisticated and insidious ways for silencing the views of opposition I would say in terms of the party system and the large amount of money and cooperation you need to be placed on an agenda. Because of China's dictatorship they are allowed to do this sort of thing much more openly, and I agree with Vance in saying that one of the biggest problems China will face is if it continues its authoritarian style government while becoming more open through trade and globalization
