North vs South Korea (and America)

As most of you know, the tensions between North and South Korea have been getting more and more hostile. North Korea is one of the most highly militarized countries in the world. After threats of nuclear war have emerged, I believe this is an issue that will and needs to be a priority of our nation. America has already done joint exercises with South Korea's military. The highly sophisticated weapons all sides possess is daunting. Just how concerned do we have to be??? If the bombs of WWII caused that much destruction....what could the current weapons do...

While we should definitely be concerned, I do not foresee any real conflict occurring between North and South Korea in the near future. Most of this rhetoric is likely just Kim Jong Un posturing and reestablishing his position as a relatively new leader. The biggest threat would come from stock market overreactions to potential conflict. North Korea has nothing to gain and everything to lose from launching any serious attacks on South Korea. Unilateral military action from North Korea seems unrealistic. At least, I hope so.

It is indeed a great concern for the nation at the moment. But it is important to understand that war politics involves a lot of rhetoric as Anthony has pointed out. The U.S. and it's allies have far more advanced technology and nuclear weapons than North Korea and it is in the knowledge of Kim Jong Un's government. Let's hope this issue dies down before getting too heated for the betterment of the world and the people!

I agree with you guys that an actual war does seem very unlikely. But while war may not breakout, this "rhetoric" showcases how far the two sides are from reaching any form of peace. I think this is especially sad for the people of North Korea, who by all accounts are living in some of the worst conditions witnessed anywhere in the world.

I've got to agree with everyone. The recent problems with North Korea seem to have a lot to do with Kim Jong Un wanting to establish himself as a strong leader in the eyes of his people. It seems like he wants to come up with a seemingly big threat that really doesn't exist. It may do a lot for him in the eyes of his people when they see him as a strong leader who doesnt get bullied by the US, but will the national sentiment be enough for the people to forget about their impoverished lifestyles.
