A first look at Elon Musk's next grand idea

http://money.cnn.com/2017/04/28/technology/elon-musk-boring-company/index.html?iid=hp-stack-dom

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk unveiled a new idea named The Boring Company, which he called his latest "venture."A mockup drawing unveiled a network of underground tunnels that vehicles can access through elevators built near roadsides. Futuristic silver platforms will carry cars to their destinations and the idea was created last December after Musk got stuck in one of Las Angeles's infamous traffic jams. Shortly after, Musk took to Twitter to blog about how he wants to fix the problem. This is something that Musk is notorious for doing, but many did not believe that the idea would actually come to life.

Musk claims that he has already made significant progress and drilling for the tunnels will start within a couple of months. The tunnel digging machine with the new Boring Company logo was unveiled yesterday receiving many skeptics. Many ideas proposed by Musk have received criticism for their complexity but he often delivers on his promises.

It will be interesting to see how this project plays out and whether or not he can actually make a difference. With an increasing number of cars on the road, this idea can potentially solve a problem that affects millions of drivers. It will also be interesting to see who gets behind the project especially politicians and other members of government. Infrastructure in the U.S. is due for an upgrade and this might just be the spark of ingenuity and creativity we need.

I like the idea that is posed. However, I do think that this will be extremely costly for our government just to create a new way to transport. If this opens up, I believe it will cause more traffic and costly transportation expenses that cannot be recovered. Once it is made public, it will cause controversy. No matter what, a large city will have large Twix. Thus is a cost that people accept when traveling through these cities.

This article really interests me. I think that this idea sounds good and it looks good on paper but I don't think that they will be able to complete this without intervention from someone saying that this is not a safe idea. the first thing I thought about when reading this is what would happen in case of a fire, would this be more dangerous then wrecks above ground. it will be interesting to see what happens as this idea moves forward.

I read a similar article where Musk sees conventional tunneling machines as a hinderance, and naturally he’s interested in designing something more efficient for his underground project. As he explains it, current tunneling machines are made to tunnel first and then construct reinforcements along the tunnel wall. I'd imagine his time to spend on this project is very limited because of his commitments to Tesla and SpaceX ventures.

It's a great idea that someone is working on fixing traffic congestion. However, eventually the tunnels will be just as congested. Additionally, seems strange to create an underground network in a city with earthquakes.

He always seems to find the most out of the box solution. I think as long as he keeps advancing the machinery it can remain an effect solution, but I agree Elise the geologic effects may be dangerious.
