NBC Launches Streaming Channel

http://www.multichannel.com/news/programming/nbc-streaming-channel-launches-roku/393967#.VgHayD5iyrk.linkedinNBC is the first prime time TV network to launch their entire inventory on to a Roku streaming channel. NBC currently running TV shows in addition to a vast inventory are giving Pay TV consumers more reason to cancel their subscriptions. By allowing Roku users to have next day access to their currently running shows they are removing the week long wait time most Pay TV On Demand services have. This latest addition to the Roku inventory is giving more evidence to the shift we're seeing in tradition TV consumption. Over the Top connected devices (devices connected by wireless connections) are becoming more popular with TV consumers, allowing them to watch TV on their own time, not fearing missing a prime time show or having to wait a week to view it. This change in technology and more premium content like NBC changing with it, could result in Pay TV providers such as Time Warner Cable to changes services or get out of the market to make room for the new evolution of TV technology.

I definitely think this is the way television networks are going to start getting into in the future. It has already been started with companies like netflix, amazon, and hulu with their own exclusive television shows and will only continue to increase in the next years. I do think there is still a small margin for shows such as the local news and sports channels to still be shown through a television provider. It will be interesting to watch as this evolution happens and how all the providers evolve or diminish in this changing market. I do think that by this becoming the new norm the prices for television service will drop as it will have to become more competitive and offer more personal options for their consumers.

This does seem to be the new trend in television, to have quicker access to tv shows on demand without the wait that current On Demand services have. With NBC being the first major network to launch their entire tv show inventory on a streaming channel other networks will definitely follow to be competitive with NBC. By removing the wait time with this service NBC is also being competitive with Netflix and Hulu so it seems that they are ahead of the other networks too. This definitely shapes what we will see in the future when it comes to tv networks and tv subscriptions.

This is definitely an interesting idea, but I'm not sure if it will benefit NBC to be honest. NBC is normally ranked the lowest of the major broadcasting networks since it's primetime lineup isn't as strong as the other channels. So I wonder if this is a push by the network to get more viewers or subscribers. Maybe that's just the cynic in me. But many other networks are moving toward streaming channels in order to make more money and increase their viewership. They also can come individually, so someone doesn't need to buy a channel package in order to use an individual channel.

I agree with everyone above, but in particular Ashley. In order to survive in the commercial television market, there has to be a move towards "online streaming" in the coming years. If not, then those commercial television companies who fail to do so will in fact fall behind and the market will push them out as a competitor takes their market sales.

Due to this, I think that in the coming years, the price for television service will have drop. This is due to an increase in competition - even though, at the same time, television service will have to become more personalized for the consumer. This is the new age of television and soon, having a television will become obsolete and there will only be online streaming.

I feel as if the ways of traditional TV viewing has come to an end. With services such as netflix, hulu, etc., I feel that this was a big step forward for this industry by having a major network offer similar services of those mentioned earlier. I personally feel that this move will spark other networks to follow in this direction.

I also feel that traditional TV viewing is approaching towards an end. With NBC taking this huge step, other competitors will surely start pulling up their socks to have their share in the market. It is also vital for the rest of the companies to offer better deals and features through their online services in order to maintain healthy competition. It would be interesting to see what other major network will be next to follow NBC's path.

The way our society watches TV as a whole is changing. Usually people would have time to watch all of the TV shows they wanted. Now, people are so busy that they don't have time to be at their TV when the shows come on. The Roku allows people to watch their favorite TV shows after it has already aired. It will redefine the industry because other cable companies are going to have to compete with the Roku if they want to compete with NBC.

This is a very smart move on NBC's part. My family has switched almost entirely over to just using a Roku instead of watching regular television. More and more people are doing the same, and it is important for companies like NBC to make the switch in order to prevent the creative destruction of that industry.
