The Latest Apple Rumor

The start of September means that the year long wait for a new Apple product or software update is coming to an end. Fortune magazine came out with an article on Tuesday speculating that the latest Apple production will follow the popular trend of online streaming platforms, original content. Netflix memberships has substantially since they started producing their own TV shows. Apple could be hoping to increase their sales after the memberships of their new music streaming platform Apple Music seeming flopped. My summer internship at a marketing/ad tech company specializing in interactive ads for connected devices (such as Roku, Amazon Fire, and smart tv's), has shown me the rapid growth of this industry. People are far beyond having multiple TVs, we moved on to having multiple devices and connections going into the tv. These devices that allows us to stream TV shows and movies are changing our TV viewing habits, with a good number of the population going so far as to cut their connection to their tv network providers. If Apple starts to produce their own content only available by their network it could continue the trends of the "chord cutters" and possibly start to damage the tv networks. Directv did just got bought by AT&T! Tip of the iceberg? Is it going down??

I'm curious to see what original content Apple might acquire. I know HBO did HBO NOW, which is like HBO GO, but aimed more toward "cord cutters". So that makes me wonder whether Showtime, Starz or other premier cable networks will join with Apple and make exclusive content.

I also know Apple TV hasn't been very popular, but maybe with Apple exclusive content, more people would switch over to using Apple TV. I'm really excited to see what the announcement will entail!

It will be very interesting to see if Apple can bring anything new to the table in the online video streaming area since Netflix has such a big hold on the industry. Maybe Apple can bring some more competition to Hulu and Netflix. I know that there is a new trend to cancel your network TV subscription and only use Netflix or Hulu since its a lot cheaper! It will definitely be interesting to see what Apple comes up with and how it will effect network TV.

In some ways I think especially recently with the addition of the Apple watch and now this new content Apple is resting a little to much on brand loyalty from their customers. When they came out with the Apple watch it has shown to be a product that consumers neither asked for or have much interest in. I think creating a niche in the market with their own content is a good idea, but it also needs to contain new innovative ideas in order to keep original consumers as well as to attract new ones. They are behind the game as competitors have already begun to move to this type of content for their products putting more pressure on Apple. Continuing to rely on the brand loyalty that Apple currently has and not creating new and innovative products will eventually catch up with them.
