Christie's International Real Estate is partnering with Dutch Docklands to present to the world's elite, the first portable private islands. The Amillarah Private Islands will create custom, self-sufficient private islands, with the base of the island being able to last over 100 years. The islands will also create an underwater habitat for sea life, while leaving hardly any negative impact on the environment. They will also be immune to the natural environment weather, such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and tsunami's, as well as rising sea levels.
From the shape and size of the island, to hammock style, the islands are completely customiziable for the owner. Christie's and Dutch Docklands hold contracts in places like New York, Dubai, and the Maldives to be able to place islands in these popular vacation spots. So, pick and create your own Heaven on Earth.
I think this is a brilliant creation. It opens up a world of possibilities for many other possible water based structures. Sure, for right now this is something that is only really available to the extremely wealthy, but years from now, small towns and cities could be developed. With the exponentially growing human population, it's very possible that we may run out of natural land for everyone to live on. With the Earth's surface being about 71% water (usgs.gov), these man made islands will just be helping mankind take advantage of space we previously could not. Also, with the advancement of Green technology, this could be an opportunity to clean up the environment while also creating countless jobs. From research and development all the way up to the architects, the possibilities for job-creation and job-innovation is endless.

This is a very interesting Rachael and it kind of reminds me of Put-In-Bay near Sandusky, Ohio. Living in Ohio my whole life it is know as being a boring place in general. Put-In-Bay puts a spin on the Ohio experience young or old. This little island attracts thousands of Americans each year from all over the country. They were able to take a small land space and turn it into a profitable business venture. If the goal of this project is to make money from tourism I think It will be extremely successful.
I think the overall idea behind the portable private islands is for them to be like little getaways for the wealthy. Sort of like a snowbird owning a condo in Florida. But I can easily see how this could expand into a branch of tourism. For instance, if Disney created their own private island that is self-sufficient, and free from hurricanes, earthquakes, tidal waves, etc.., this could become a huge success for them. Many other business could also piggyback off of this idea, possibly creating their own private island for their business, even if it's not for tourism, but just so they had more privacy or land to expand and work with.
This is a curious piece of news for sure! Rachael I like your point about this being a way to use space that we haven't been able to use yet especially the way the population is growing and continuing to do so! It is also kind of alarming at the same time because like you said this will only be an option for the filthy rich for a long time and there has to been some negative consequences to this. How will this change the natural environment of the ocean? Look how we live on land and how we currently treat where we live. Do we want our way of life to spread further into the oceans than it already has?
