New $100 bill

The design of the new $100 bill was first unveiled in 2010 and was supposed to go into circulation in February, 2011. However, because of slower-than-expected production resulting in a three-year delay, an improved, high-tech $100 bill will finally make its debut on October 8th. The new bill is a culmination of a decade-long research and design process. The bill features a series of amped-up security measures aimed at combating counterfeiters, including a blue, 3-D security ribbon on the front of the bill that moves when the note is titled back and forth and side to side. The inkwell and bell on the front of the bill and the number 100 on the right-hand corner also change from copper to green when the note is tilted. It is interesting to see what kind of effects the new bill will have on the economy when it debuts.

All the new features sound pretty cool, but I do not think the new bill will have much effect on the economy. Just looking online real quick it does not appear that counterfeit currency is a real problem. Right now there is over $600 billion in the hands of the public. The Secret Service estimates that less than 0.01% of that is counterfeit. So while the new bill may be cool it won't address any major economic problems.

A change wouldn't hurt but I wonder what the costs of designing the new bill and then bringing it out to the market are.

Interesting facts, Austin. I wonder how long until criminals find a way to counterfeit this bill that took this long to create and finalize.

I agree with Linh, there was probably alot of money and resources put into designing this new bill. I'm wondering when the penny and nickle will stop being produced considering they cost more to make than they are actually worth.

It is amazing to see that people will spend this much time in the prevention of counter fitting of bills while bigger budget concerns are around

Well, maybe while they couldn't find a way to cut the budget, they need to spend time doing something. And that something, as Austin showing the fact, is not worth the time, the money, and the efforts they spent.
