The famous billionaire investor and captain of private equity, Stephen Schwarzman, has just established a $300 million scholarship program for students to pursue a one-year Master's program in China. This huge investment in human capital seems geared toward the ever popular notion that China's rapid growth makes the country incredibly important to geopolitical and economic interests. The majority of the scholarship students will be chosen from the United States, with the rest coming from China and other countries around the world. The program will take place at Beijing's elite Tsinghua University and will begin in 2016 with its inaugural class of 200 scholars. Students will choose courses within the following four academic disciplines: Public Policy, International Relations, Economics & Business, and Engineering.

I think this is an excellent program for the international relations between the US and China. I think this scholarship program will serve as an example for many countries around the world to do so as well. A concern is what will the longevity of these programs be with the rising concern over the future for higher education. These MOOCs certainly have received a lot of attention in recent news, but will they affect large programs such as this one by educating the same number of students at a fraction of the price. My personal belief is that the abroad experience in China will be invaluable to these American students that they would otherwise be unable to have, and is why I think we can expect a rising trend towards more international studies programs in the future.
Finally we see an individual making good use of his wealth. I think this is a great program. The United States can definitely learn a lot from China. 300 million is a generous large donation and it is my hope that these scholar will excel.
A very well known investor and also a valuable philanthropist; he donated $100 million to the New York Public Library, and the main building now bears his name. It will be interesting if his program becomes as prestigious as the Rhodes Scholarship. I
