The New Capitalists

This article is in today's addition of The Economist.  It is talking about how North Korea, an example of a socialist economy, in some respects, is moving toward being a capitalist market.  This is not a political move, but instead is an economic move by the people.  It encourages people to give to the radio station that streams into N. Korea so that the people there are more informed that their current system is not free.  This is interesting to me because one of the few examples of a planned economy is appearing to change a bit.

After reading the article, I am uneasy. The emerging capitalistic market in N.Korea is primarily from those who can bribe and smuggle goods from surrounding countries. I believe we should be concern about Kim Jong Un and his decisions. He has seen more modernist than his father. However, tensions between N.Korea and other countries cannot be ignored. The talk of nuclear weapons are what makes me uneasy. N. Korea has been known to be extremely oppressive to its citizens and so little is known about their culture. I know recently, they have started to allow tourists to come and attend very strictly planned tours. However, if a revolution were to occur, we may not know how radical Kim may be to restore order and assert his dominance to the N. Korean people. I believe we should continue to talk to Kim and try to convince N.Korea to come further out of isolation and begin to function as a contributing nation in the world. However, the way approach the situation is difficult to plan. I hope that we do find a compromise and that the thought of a nuclear war will at least be postponed for some more time.
