Online farmville just got interesting

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/18/technology/tech-industry-sets-its-sights-on-gambling.html?pagewanted=2&_r=0&ref=business

This article is about the new innovation in gambling that has swept the world so far but has ye to hit america. Many games such as farmville and many of peoples other favorite games have suddenly become gambling havens for many people overseas, where this industry has been first introduced due to the lack of gambling regulations that are overseas. Although they are looking to come to america very shortly and wreck havoc on the people here as well, estimating a 300 billion dollar profit to come from the United States, just as large as the casino share in the country.

This article has me skeptical. I think that most definitely this market is going to further develop as the tech and online industry trends upwards again. However, the "bright future" of online gambling and the feasibility of betting from smartphones worries me. Gambling is a highly-addictive and dangerous industry to be playing with, but seemingly inevitable. It is true that Indian and Vegas casinos have a huge potential to bring in unprecedented tax revenue. However, I think that the development of this industry has even greater potential to spiral out of control. Think identity hackers and credit crisis. With more people encouraged to engage in an activity that may result in them spending money they don't have, the outcome could be fateful. Although, with proper regulation and close monitoring, this could be excellent growth to create jobs, raise tax revenue, and set a new standard for socialization with friends.

Gambling seems to be an inevitable pastime for many people. This would just be another method for people to fulfill that desire. However, I do think that identity fraud and other problems could occur from widespread use of online games for gambling purposes. There is already an issue with these games taking out extra payments after having your credit card information. This problem paired with the dangers of gambling could be a dreadful combination.
