Death Of A Country

This article talks of the continuing disintegration of Syria as it's civil war rages on. Despite opposition from rebel soldiers, it seems that the Assad regime is entrenched and far from being toppled. America's lack of involvement is criticized by the author, who urges Barack Obama to step in and arm the rebels and create a no fly zone to ground Assad's air force. Before Syria can rebuild, the country needs to be pacified and secured, but with some of the rebel fighters being jihadists, extra steps must be taken to ensure a moderate Syria emerges. Its just a reminder of the internal stability other countries like the US take for granted.

6. We in the U.S. do take for granted that there will be no war on our home soil and that although political debates may get quite heated, a war will not start over differences in beliefs any time soon. While we are in a position where we could help other countries, the decision to aid one side in a war is always a scary one. Even if that decision seems obvious, we should be careful in deciding when and how to aid a country. In a time when our deficit is a rising issue and a long-fought war overseas is finally ending, should we give aid to another country?

I see no reason why the United States should intervene on behalf of either side, especially since any action we take will be viewed as us pursuing our own interests in the region (and thus extremely negatively). If anything we could open our country to Syrian refugees but I'm hesitant to recommend much more than that.
