In a bold push, Target goes international

For years, Target and its competitors backed away from expanding internationally. Now, finally the Target Corporation is making their first attempt to go internationally into Canada. The Minneapolis, MN based retailer explained that their plan is to open 100 to 150 stores in Canada over a two year period starting in 2013 when Target opens its first Canadian store. In recent years Target has only been able to open up 10-21 stores. This is a huge step forward for Target. The international deal is $1.85 billion for Target to obtain leasehold interests in up to 220 stores run by Zellers Inc. (Canada’s second-largest mass-merchandise retailer).

Target is my favorite store to shop at. The store offers a broad array of unique, high-quality products at reasonable prices for its consumers. I believe Target is making a very bold move by going internationally and I think it will extremely benefit the company as a whole. This transaction is giving Target a tremendous opportunity to expand the Target brand, the Target store and the experience of shopping at Target worldwide!

Isn't it too bold to suddenly expand and manage a hundred stores in the market where Walmart already dominated and won over Zellers Inc?

This is very interesting to see Target going international. This is a bold move against Walmart. I can see this is an opportunity for consumers to get cheaper price and better service due to competition between the two giant retail stores.

I understand why Target is making the move to go international, but I wouldn't say going to Canada will change their place in the market all that much. Wal-Mart will still be the leader, but this is a good move for Target. They might want to consider going overseas, however.

Whether Wal-Mart can still lead the market in the future is hard to tell, but anyway, customers always welcome more competition. And Target has the right color for Canada.

I think this is a very bold move for Target, which will be openly welcomed into the Canadian Economy. This will certainly for prices to drop in Canadian Wal-marts, which will serve as Target's greatest competitor.

It is somewhat surprising that Target is just not expanding outside of the United States. Atleast to me they seem to be large enough and well enough established to have done something like this a while ago.
