After Facebook and Obama, Chris Hughes launches nonprofit Jumo

Chris Hughes, a co-founder of Facebook, is organizing a new website that connects individuals and organizations striving to help the world. This site will be called Jumo which means "together in concert" in Yoruba a West African language. The site will have vistors fill out questions to help them discover personally relevant opportunities to donate their time and money. This website is experimenting with using social networking for social good. This type of internet service would level the playing field for non-profit organizations that can not afford expensive/direct market campaigns.

I am really excited to see if Jumo works. I think it highlights the point that many non-profits with good intentions simply can not survive without the help of celebrity endorsers or many volunteers. I think a service such as Jumo could really benefit non-profit organizations that do not have deep enough pockets to be able to market themselves effectively.

I think this is pretty awesome. Chris Hughes has shown great success with facebook so he obviously knows how to get started. I am also wondering how this will work out in the long run. I think a lot of people have good ideas that if shared can expand to even better ideas that might actually work. If this is marketed as well as facebook, this could be very successful because I haven't seen anything done like this before. I hope it works!

I think it is a smart move for someone like Chris Hughes to use his success and status as the founder of Facebook to do some good. It would be an extremely smart marketing scheme to advertise Jumo on Facebook because millions of people use it (oftentimes obsessively) every day, looking at pictures and posting on walls. Using Facebook as a linkage to this great nonprofit site could finally (as Chris Hughes said) catch the online world up with the desire to be positively engaged in the world around us.
