Brazil: Amazon sees worst deforestation levels in 15 years

Brazil has hit its highest level of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest. According to the data, approximately 13,235 sq km (5110 sq miles) was lost during the 2020-21 period, which is the highest it has been since 2006.

Brazil’s space research agency has found that deforestation has increased by 22% in a year.

Brazil was amongst some of the nations that promised to end and reverse deforestation by 2030 during the COP26 climate summit. During the conference, many countries pledged to end and reverse the practice. The pledge included $19.2bn of public and private funds. Some of which will go to developing countries to restore damaged land, tackle wildfires and support indigenous communities.

The current figures are not a reflection of what has been happening over the past few months. President Jair Bolsonaro has encouraged agriculture and mining activities in the rainforest.

There is typically a great discrepancy between what a countries promise they will do and what they actually do when it comes to climate change. This can be compared to countless promises by the US to make changes to emissions. Since there are no repercussions or international laws regarding climate change, there is no enforcement mechanism that only hurts one single country. When there are actions taken from an international standpoint, there are always other countries that hurt.

I think as long as Bolsonaro is in charge the Amazon rainforest is very much doomed seeing the increased number of fires and droughts in the region and from the fact that Bolsonaro has removed all of the deforestation laws that the previous administration had placed.
Ofcourse, Bolosonaro is just looking to take advantage of the global markets while the commodity prices are high and demand from China is strong without much regard for the environment.
