Covid cases rising across the U.S.

Over the past two weeks, the U.S. has experienced a third surge of positive COVID tests. Since September cases have risen from under 50k a day to a little over 150k currently. On Friday, California became the second state to hit one million Covid cases, after Texas. And while deaths have lowered, around 1,000 people succumb to complications associated with the virus each day.

In response, many governors are starting to implement more restrictions on bars, gyms, and restaurants. They have even considered the idea of going into a second lockdown. The Oregon governor started a two week mini-shutdown to help slow the spread, saying "I'm not asking you, I am telling you, to stop your social gatherings ... and your house parties and to limit your social interactions to six and under, not more than one household."

Do any of you believe a second lockdown is imminent? And, if so, what will the long-term implications on our economy look like?

I believe if we continue to trend the way cases are currently and with new leadership elected within the government a second lockdown will happen. Although a second lockdown would be hard on the economy, it will likely have a round of stimulus sent with it. When comparing the situation in the U.S. to that of other countries who are now allowing large gatherings with no outbreaks, we certainly need a change if we want a return to normal soon. If we do not get the virus under control soon, the implications on the economy will be worse than if we go into a lockdown that would end the virus sooner.

I am going off from what Max said and just want to put emphasis on the fact that if the spread isn't stopped the long-term implications for the economy are being much worse than what a small lockdown will do. I feel bad for business owners like restaurants, gym's etc but something needs to be done where people are made more serious about the severity of the virus. Perhaps the new administration will do a better job in doing this.

I believe that a second lockdown has to be implemented for the betterment of the people. Everything has started becoming very normalized and people are taking things casually. even during the first lockdown cases were increasing and without a lockdown, things are getting worse. there are going to be many long-term effects on the economy but if we don't have a second lockdown things will get worse in the future.

I don't think that a second lockdown will be put in place until the new government takes control in January. With the new about the vaccine to be ready by the end of the year for distribution, I don't think that a lockdown is imminent. However, I do believe that lockdown should be imposed to save lives now, the US economy has survived a lot of events, and will most likely come out of this as well. Therefore, the lives of the people are more important than the economy.
