Trump will sign executive order banning immigration into the U.S.

President Trump stated on Monday the 20th, that he will sign an executive order that will suspend immigration into the U.S. temporarily amid the pandemic. Trump tweeted out that "In the light of the attack from the Invisible Enemy, as well as the need to protect the jobs of our GREAT American Citizens.." After this, a lot of questions came about seeing as hours before he tweeted this, he was talking optimistically about certain states opening up their economies despite the treat of the virus. It is also unclear if Trump had made other countries aware of this decision before tweeted out his statement.

As of right now, Trump has not provided any major details on when this suspension would go into place and how long it will last.

Do you think that President Trump's order will stay in place even after the pandemic ends seeing as he has already tried to limit immigration into the U.S. well before the pandemic started?

Trump is using the pandemic to push the agenda he's had since being elected... severely cutting immigration. Therefore, I do think it will stay in place, at least until a clinically sane president comes along. If Trump was really doing this for the US's safety, his target would not be "immigration" but foreign travel to and from the US in general. Immigration to the US could be controlled by simply testing immigrants for the coronavirus before approving them to enter the US, but Trump is vindictive and stupid.

It unfortunately seems like politicians are trying to use this pandemic as an opportunity to push forward their agenda. It seems to be the case for both Trump in terms of immigration and for Democrats in terms of expanding welfare in the US. Under these circumstances, I think both are merited actions and positions to hold. My concern, and the concern of their critics, is that this policy-pushing has ulterior motives.

I agree with the above comments about how during this pandemic many politicians have pushed their agenda mainly due panic over covid-19. Right now many politicians have realized that if they are able to spin it so that their side seems to be helping the spread, then many people are easily swayed to support that side even without knowing all the details. I also think that this will continue on after the virus has been contained because they will always have that it passed during the virus to fall back on which will also make it hard to get rid of eventually as well.

My guess is that this will go away in waves after the pandemic slows. Countries like Hungary which is fairly conservative and had closed borders thus a far smaller infection rate than their other European neighbors, or the UK and Canada will probably be some of the first countries to be reopened to. I also think that places like Iran, a country that Trump hasnt had the best relations with and had high infection rates will be one of the last to be reopened to.

I think that Trump will defiantly use this pandemic as leverage to push his immigration policy when everything is said and done. The suspension will go away as soon as it's able to given that it was put in place to prevent the spread of Covid-19. I do think that the reopening of states is a terrible idea, this will only create another shutdown, making things much worse then if we were to try and reopen before we are ready.

I agree with what Louis said. Closing immigration is not solving the problem if visitors are still allowed to come in. Nobody should be allowed in or everybody should be allowed in, there is no difference if the "lock down" is not a true lock down.
