As States Push to Reopen, Business Leaders Say Not So Fast

In an article published to The New York Times, business executives are asked for their take on what seems like an early reopening of the economy in select states. Many responded by saying that they refuse to open because the effects of a second shut down would be much more devastating then just staying closed. Many others expressed that they feared for the health of their employees and would judge when to reopen based on the feedback they received from them. There are a lot of fears that if these businesses decide to open too early that they will be met with no business and that a lot of their employees would not be willing to come back.

What do you think? Do you think that it's too early for non-essential businesses to reopen? Or do you think that they need to open to help the economy?

I personally think that it is too early for non-essential businesses to reopen just because I feel like it could ruin all the progress the country has accomplished so far. I also think that people are finally getting used to the stay-at-home order and I think that if we reopen and people start going back to what they used to do and then get told to go back in lockdown again that they would be even more angry.

I agree. I think it is definitely too soon since the curve has not flattened substantially, and a second wave is bound to occur if non-essential business start to re-open. The number of new cases are still increasing everyday, and until that continues to persist it is no way near possible to safely open up again

In my opinion, I believe that it is too early to reopen non-essential businesses in America, since there is still a chance of a second spike in cases. Unless states and cities can continue the progress they have already made, and decrease the number of cases present there, they should not reopen their economies and non-essential businesses.

This is an interesting angle that I haven't yet thought of from the perspective of business owners. I bet they are eager to reopen, however they know in the back of their minds that coming back too soon and risking a second wave of shutdowns would be catastrophic to their businesses. A risk adverse approach from business owners here.

I believe it is still too early to tell businesses they can open their doors to the public once again. There is a very real possibility of a second spike and the work that everyone did in staying home and staying socially distanced could be for nothing if the disease continues to spread at a rapid pace
