Ohio Orders Abortion Clinics to stop "Nonessential Abortions" because of Coronavirus

The Ohio Attorney General ordered abortion clinics to stop performing nonessential abortions and surgeries. This decision was made in order to preserve medical equipment for health care providers who are on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was also done in order to preserve hospital capacity for those who are infected. A spokesperson for the Attorney General expressed that the term "non-essential" describes any procedure that can be delayed without risking the current and future health of a patient. Furthermore, the White House recommended canceling all other non-essential surgeries nationwide. There is currently a "stay at home" order in the State of Ohio and 247 confirmed coronavirus cases.https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/22/us/ohio-abortion-coronavirus/index.html

The stay at home order issued in Ohio is a sensible move as the pandemic grows exponentially. However, I don't think that handling an issue as sensitive as abortion should be dealt with in the same regards as the stay at home order, nor should it be classified as non-essential since it is a circumstantial situation. Covid 19 should not be used as an excuse to further political agenda.

It can be argued that the governor is using the Coronavirus Pandemic as a way to further his political agenda, which shouldn't be the case. However, in these times it is essential that the medical equipment needed to fight the pandemic is preserved. Therefore, the governor's response is justifiable. Yet, if abortion wasn't singled out and all nonessential surgeries were cancelled to fight the pandemic, then it would be less political.

I think that many of the other choices before this that the Ohio governor has made such as the shelter in place and working from home for all non-essential employees, this closure of nonessential abortions is quite surprising. I know that many other non-essential medical services are closing down such as some dermatologists, physical therapists, and more so this may be a part of that. In order to keep human-to-human contact down many non-essential services are closing to make sure that any sort of illness, asymptomatic or not, will be prevented.
