Italy Extends Virus Containment Measures to Entire Country

Italy Extends Virus Containment Measures to Entire Country  (link)

Amidst all of the coronavirus drama, Italy has taken another step to try and contain the virus by putting the entire country on lockdown until April 3rd. Italy is the second most effected country following China due to the fact that it has the 2nd oldest aging population, following Japan. According to the article, there is allowed to be no travel outside or into the country, no public gatherings, and schools have already been closed until further notice. In addition, most businesses are required to close by 6pm.

Italy has also been experiencing riots in their prisons and protests outside of them asking them to allow amnesty to its prisoners due to the virus.

What economic consequences could you see as a result of these drastic changes? Do you think Italy will remain on lockdown until April 3rd? Can you think of a more effective way this could've been handled?

I think having the country on lockdown is the best way possible to currently control the epidemic and prevent it from spreading. This will give those who are infected the chance to fully recover, and since the population is aging and there are increasing deaths in Italy daily, it will help the people heal. This would have pretty severe negative economic outcomes and drive down the country's growth rate until there is some sort of stabilization or cure for the virus.

I agree- it is the only way to contain coronavirus which has caused a lot of panic among people. I do not see any other alternative to handle this crisis, therefore it is best to stick with this plan.

This containment policy has been implemented by almost every country that now has it because it has slowed down the infection rate somewhat in the places that it has been adopted in. However the growing risk of riots and just overall havoc being caused by the panic that has been induced by this virus. Many drastic changes will have to happen due to the quarantines that will be around for even longer now.
