Impact of Oil Spill in Indonesia

The Indonesian government has declared a state of emergency after an oil spill has continued to spread right off of the country's coast. The oil eventually caught fire producing thick black smoke. The repercussions of an oil spill like this go beyond the immediate fatalities. A significant portion of Indonesia's exports consist of seafood- with the oil spill it goes without saying that not only does the oil spill kill marine life but also, seafood may be contaminated and not fit for consuming. Inadvertently, the fishing sector suffers, especially traditional fisherman who depend on seafood as their daily livelihood. The oil spill may possibly ruin ships and fishing equipment too. Indonesia's tourism industry may also take a blow due to this, with one of it's main attractions being its beautiful beaches which may be contaminated. Moreover, businesses that earn revenue from recreational services such as jet ski rentals or even restaurants near the beach may also suffer a loss in profits.

It is clear from this article that the oil spill has proven to be devastating for a diverse number of industries. The oil company at blame should be greatly punished as well as pay large fines to the industries that are suffering, as well as to the Indonesian government. Further safety measures should be researched and be implemented so this does not happen again.

This is a very serious problem for both Indonesia and the world economy. A large amount of international shipping passes through Indonesian waters, and the recent oil spill will make transportation of goods much more difficult.

As Amy and Jake emphasized, this is very concerning and has many repercussions for Indonesia's economy. I agree with Amy though, there should definitely be an investigation as to how this happened and how they can take preventative measures for this to not happen again in the future. Moreover, throughout history there have been many oil spills that have had devastating effects on the environment and economies. I think there should be safety inspections for all possibilities that could lead to an oil spill.

I think oil spills are one of the only times at which environmental concerns directly affect business interests, meaning that business interests are forced to care about collective action problems. So yeah, they should be punished in some form, but just the incidence of an oil spill opens the community's eyes to the actual impact of unregulated oil drilling. In the past, oil spills have caused a lot of initial reactions but very few long-term environmental solutions, so I hope this situation ends up differently.

The oil spill is one of the serious disasters in the sea caused by human activity. I would expect that the country's coast would be highly polluted and the quality of the seafood would be doubted. The seafood market in Indonesia would suffer due to the seafood shortage and the price would go up. The government has to deal with the pollution and they have to spend a lot of money on it, which would satisfy the economy growth.

This is definitely a huge tragedy for Indonesia. I remember how bad the BP Gulf of Mexico oil spill was in 2010. That was tough for the US and its economy, but I can only imagine how much of an impact this event will have on a smaller country like Indonesia, which relies heavily on the fishing industry as well as exporting goods.

I think it's devastating to note that the oil spill occurred just off the coast of Indonesia. Since Indonesia is an island with an estimated of 260 million people, I would be curious to know the long-term implications this has for the region, in terms of tourism and the fish export industry that exists. In my opinion, all the stakeholders involved in the oil spill should be either compensated by the company involved or by means of the government of Indonesia.

This tragedy will not only have major impacts on the Indonesian's economy but its also directly impacting it's communities in a very bad way. People in the communities who are joining the clean-up process are not equipped with safety gear like boots or gloves so that they can avoid touching the oil directly. When they come in contact with it, their skin becomes irritated. Thus putting these communities at high risk of danger if they keep touching the oil.

An oil spill, as mentioned in the article, is detrimental to the economy, along with the overall well being of the community. It would be interesting to see the type of policies imposed following this crisis, along with Indonesia's recovery since the oil spill would have a major impact on the fishing industry, which Indonesia relies on.

I agree w/ Jake. This is going to have a huge impact not only to Indonesian economy but also many in Asia. I really hope that they can find a solution to this.
