The Genocide the US Didn't See Coming

This Politico article discusses the ways that the US's involvement in Myanmar may or may not have led to the current Rohingya genocide, especially under the Obama administration. The lifting of economic sanctions by the Obama administration was seen as a way to publicly show that countries that changed their ways and showed movement towards democracy could be forgiven. However, many people think that the sanctions were too much, too soon, and may actually have enriched Myanmar's generals, who hold large stakes in the economy (much like Russian oligarchs).

This is relevant to Economic Systems because it shows the ways in which different types of systems interact with each other, and how smaller countries are rewarded for conforming to the dominant system (capitalist democracy). It also shows the ways in which economic sanctions can be effective tools for moral or religious judgements of other countries.

This is a very interesting article because it raises the point of the benefit of US involvement in other nations. There points for and against the argument that US involvement gave rise to the Rohingya genocide. Therefore, it is hard to decide which economic system or form of government is the proper one. Obama lifted sanctions because they started to move towards democracy, but who is to say democracy is the right form of government? That is used as an incentive for other countries to be more like us.

As mentioned in the post above, this does show that the dominant economic system, market capitalism, has a lot of power over smaller countries with different economic systems. It truly shows the power that capitalist countries have.

I think the US's involvement could have definitely influenced the problems that exist. Our actions in the past have had consequences such as the desaparecidos in South America during the dirty wars. I agree with Lucas in the fact that who is to say democracy is the right form of government. Ultimately, as the country the world looks to, the US is in a tough situation because they are criticized for doing nothing and criticized for doing a lot.
