Trump prepares for critical week of diplomacy

This week,Mr Trump is going to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on Friday. This meeting is critical not only because it is the first meeting between Mr Xi and Mr Trump after the US president raised tensions with comments over Taiwan, trade and the South China Sea, but also it will reflect sharp changes of direction he has already wrought in US foreign policy

“The meeting next week with China will be a very difficult one in that we can no longer have massive trade deficits and job losses,” Mr Trump said in a Tweet. It would be interesting to see how he’d react to those words. And Trump, a new president who needs to show results soon, could chalk up a rare win.

This meeting will be of crucial importance to the future of trade relations between the US and China. Donald Trump is putting a lot of pressure onto the Chinese in order to aid them with North Korea's issues on nuclear activities. So it will be interesting how the American President will act upon it.

I doubt that Trump will walk back any of his comments concerning Taiwan despite the historical tensions that have existed between the country and China. More likely, the conversation will be like walking on eggshells for both leaders as they try to satisfy what they believe to be the best interests of their respective countries while, hopefully, not being directly antagonistic.

With the strike on Syria taking place during the encounter between President Xi Jinping and Mr. Trump, it comes as no surprise because Trump wants China to be more affirmative in the North Korea issue . Mr. Trump wants China to do more to deter the development of nuclear weapons by North Korea, its ally, and views from experts say that the Syria attack is a reminder to Mr. Xi that the United States could also attack the North, if necessary.

The meeting was a success given that both sides remained cordial and took a step toward tackling the trade issue by increasing China's imports from the U.S.
