Mac vs. PC cybersecurity

Microsoft has begun a $1 billion investment into their cybersecurity software to hopefully end some of the debate over whether Apple has better cybersecurity. Cybersecurity is only becoming increasingly more relevant as more and more high-profile attacks are occurring. Sony and J.P. Morgan Chase are two very relevant attacks that have put Microsoft in the spotlight for stepping up their cybersecurity software. They will be putting in more money to respond to threats faster and make sure customers feel as though their data is safe.

Apple has often advertised that their cybersecurity is much better, but many claim this is only because the majority of the computers in the world are PCs or run on Microsoft software. Windows 10 is the most recent operating system and their hoping that it is the most secure. One of the key features that it is had is providing cloud space for data, which is space that is much harder to get access to. Microsoft stresses that is important to work with the best technology of the industry and uses third-party companies to help with extra security.

It is encouraging to here that Microsoft is being proactive in stepping up to improve their cybersecurity. With the recent heightened issue of cyber attacks, it is imperative that Microsoft take action immediately, especially due to the fact that they were being largely targeted for the blame. Although it is a good sign that Microsoft has invested a significant amount of money into good technology, hopefully they will be able to differentiate themselves enough from Apple in order to keep their competitive edge. An increasing amount of money being invested in research and development, and a differentiated marketing strategy may be able to keep Microsoft in good standing.

I agree with Sophia in that it is a great starting point for Microsoft to begin to invest in better cyber-security for their products. I think especially now and into the future it is critical for companies such as Microsoft and Apple to provide this security with the continuing increase of business that is done online. If they are not able to provide these kinds of services to consumers I cannot see how they will be able to flourish in the market. They have done a good job so far differentiating themselves with their various products such as computers that can also be tablets, flip screens and many others, but if they are able to couple this with security I think they could carve out a competitive niche in the market.

As stated by Sophia and Ashley, it is great to see the effort and progress Microsoft is making to heighten their cyber-security given the increase in significant cyber attacks. What interests me is how Apple has been known to have the "premier" cyber-security in their devices, yet the world is still dominated by Microsoft products. It will be interesting to see if there is a changeover to Apple products in the future given their proven security software. In addition to that however, if the transition does happen, will Apple be able to stay true to their claim and be able to protect these corporations from attacks.

This will surely be interesting to see how Apple reacts to this huge investment made by Microsoft. Microsoft definitely has bigger customer base and share in most parts of the world. Apple also needs to step up and spend on its research and development to come up with something which would provide even more secured features to its clients. All in all, this healthy competition will only make cyber-security even stricter, more secured that would eventually benefit both businesses and consumers in the long-run.

I wonder what this means for the many anti virus companies, such as Norton. Various stores that retail Microsoft equipped products often sell cybersecurity software along side it since the Microsoft software isn't enough, unlike Apple. With this new investment into establishing better cybersecurity, will there be a need to have these additional softwares? With the size of the investment, hopefully not. So what does this mean for the software companies?

I think it is incredibly smart to heavily invest in cybersecurity. Today, many people do virtually everything online and it online takes one hack for people to lose trust. By funding research and development to drastically reduce the chance of a cyber attack, companies will gain the trust of many consumers. This is a very smart move.
