The Promise and Failure of Community Colleges

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/18/business/economy/the-promise-and-failure-of-community-colleges.html?ref=economy&_r=0

"There are two critical things to know about community colleges. The first is that they could be the nation’s most powerful tools to improve the opportunities of less privileged Americans, giving them a shot at harnessing a fast-changing job market and building a more equitable, inclusive society for all of us. The second is that, at this job, they have largely failed."

I think community colleges give people who are less privilege a chance. if Obama is really going to impose the free community college act then more people will have a chance to continue higher education. When the equal opportunity is given, it all depends on how people use it to be sucessful.

I agree with the above statement. While community colleges may not be successful in terms of graduation rates, providing the opportunity to attend and succeed is a step towards reducing inequality. It is ultimately up to those who enroll to determine if they have a successful experience. Community colleges cannot do the work for those who enroll.

The article states that just providing free community college education will not help students from lower income groups get an equal opportunity as students need to be trained to handle the pressures of college. So, either the government should fund programs that educate pregnant women and young mothers the importance of right cognitive development or should additionally fund the career and counselling offices in colleges to help students.
What other alternatives do you think?
