SOPA and PIPA postponed indefinitely after protests

The Senate had been scheduled to hold a proceedural vote next week on whether to take up the Protect IP Act (PIPA) -- a bill that once had widespread, bipartisan support. But on Friday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he was postponing the vote "in light of recent events."

Do you think the potential financial implications of this bill have held any sway with lawmakers? Those choosing to still uphold the bills see the potential benefits of continued royalties for artists and copyright holders, but what about the other side? Since the dawn of Napster and other websites, legally obtaining copyrighted material on the internet has become much easier. Overall this bill would have a positive impact on these legal websites, but a potentially negative impact on creative expression. In addition, our existing copyright laws are about as thorough as they can get without other strict changes. These bills also overlook modern technologies and internet capabilities. Unless strict control over the internet is imposed at large, there will always be ways to get around copyright infringement.
