Google in fresh move against Facebook

Google has recently made an attempt to counter Facebook’s increasing popularity on the web. Google has veered away from creating a whole new social network type of addition on their own. Instead they have copied a few of Facebooks features in order to add a social element to its search service.

Googles latest addition to their search engine was based on the version of Facebook’s “like” button. This allows users to “vote” on web pages they like and personalize their preferences that would then appear in other search results seen by their friends.

Hopefully this new added feature will allow users to interact more directly with its search results. And maybe this will add a new dimension for networking and finding reliable information.

I dont believe that Google can actually compete with Facebook in this market. For most people, they only login one social network a day. It is not likely that one person would have two social networks checked every single day. My space is an example of that. My space is losing its coustomers due to Facebook.

I'm sure this will help Google in terms of popularity among users, but I agree they will not be able to compete with Facebook in terms of social networking. However the idea behind making Google more socially attractive is great, and with these new dimensions Google could further separate themselves from the other competing search engines.

Maybe this is a move to compete with Bing - the other search engine that claims to sort through the results better than google.

Even though it is unlikely that Google will be able to compete with Facebook in terms of social networking it is important they start adjusting and innovating. Google's popularity will increase and it will help prevent the loss of users to other search engines that due adapt to the current importance of social networking.

regarding what Xing said, I would agree that Google is not ready to catch up with Facebook or compete with Facebook in the social network. However, it is unclear how Google going to launch the new social network. If there're better features, the current facebook users may substitute facebook.
