Haiti to unveil $3.9B restructuring plan at the U.N

In an effort to reconstruct Haiti, President René Préval will be unveiling a $3.9 billion plan to begin the reshaping of the country's post-earthquake economy and infrastructure. The action plan marks the first phase of a highly ambitious reconstruction effort that could pour more than $11 billion in international aid into Haiti over the next decade. The overall cost of the damage and losses is said to be more than $8 billion. More than 1.3 million people have been displaced by the earthquake and are living in hundreds of settlements and makeshift camps.

It is good to see that the UN is going to be putting $11 billion in to the reconstruction of Haiti's infrastructure. Hopefully the new infrastructure will help haiti move away from being the poorest country in the Western hemisphere.

This funding is most likely going to end up leading to more corruption, as Haiti is already a very poor country that has faced problems with corruption.

I agree with Alex, I'm glad to see that a healthy portion of money will be flowing into Haiti to help aid the reconstruction of an ailing nation. Yet, I also remain skeptical of it's overall impact. The governing institutions must be very careful in establishing a very strong framework or infrastructure, complete with safety nets, to ensure that Haiti recover and grow to its fullest potential in the future.
