Japanese-Brazilians in Japan

Japan's labor shortage might force Japan to open its door to immigrant workers from other countries. This article talks about how Japan is coping with these "outsiders". It is exemplary of yet another case of globalization, of greater labor mobility and the challenges it entails.

I read the article. And I thought it is good for Brazilian-Japanese that they finally could work in Japan. By the way, I thought Japan was one of the countries that have high unemployment rate. I do not understand why Japan has a labor shortage.

Followings are the articles about the high unemplyment rate of Japan.

Can anyone explain this?

I think it is true that Japan is experiencing high unemployment rate. The labor shortage mentioned in the NYTime article could be traced back in 1990 and that was when the influx of Brazilians with Japanese descent was allowed to come in and work. Yet the prospect of opening up the country for foreign workers is very imminent for Japan's future, especially as the demographics's aging problem gets worse.
