China is concerned about much more than India outgrowing its population

China has reacted defensively to the news that India is on track to overtake it as the world's most populous country, accusing Western media of focusing only on population size rather than other factors such as education, industrial output, and economic clout. While the two countries are geopolitical rivals, with a border dispute and ongoing clashes between troops, China says that population size doesn't equate to national power, and instead emphasizes the importance of consumer and investor confidence. Both China and India face their own challenges, with China's aging population raising serious questions about the country's ability to maintain its economic status, while India has struggled to create enough jobs to support its growing population.

I find it weird that China cares if it is overtaken in population. I would think this is a sign of success in their efforts to reduce population and handle their people better. After all, in a communist county it might be helpful to have more resources for less people. More population in no way means a more powerful country.

I agree with Elliot. I don't think this something that should concern China as their GDP is significantly larger than India's despite the population difference.

Hello Aamir,

This is very interesting. I am in agreeance that just because India will surpass China in population, that doesn't mean that they instantly become more powerful. Even so, China must understand that if India's population is growing then it means there are large numbers of babies being born. China has no reason to be worried right now because new borns arent able to contribute to the economy for another 15-16 years.

Overall, good post. Well done.

Although China says they don't believe the population is a driver in economics, it must worry them in some way. In 2021 there was a report which said that China overstated its population by around 130 million. Maybe China believes that a declining population will be seen as weak and want to avoid that thought. Overall the situation between them and India is interesting, and as much as they disagree, their relationship seems to be growing for the good.
