While it may be true that less than half of Americans own stock, that does not mean that less than half of Americans have money invested in companies. Many Americans own small businesses that don't have stock. Places like the local restaurant, laundry or beauty salon are often single owner businesses or partnerships that do not issue stock.
This article basically talks about hedging.
