Cocoa prices soar on Ivorian ban

I personally find this article interesting because, it raises an important question which is “to what extend should the politic of country be intertwine with his economy”? I believe that it is unacceptable for Alassane Ouattara to stop all export of cocoa just to arm ONE man. This as seen the article affect people globally, people that have nothing to do with the political conflict in Ivory Coast. This increases the price of cocoa and will increase the price of other cocoa based product such as chocolate.

The economy should not be used for political influence.

This is an interest article and an example of pure corruption. Banning the exportation of Cocoa drove prices of cocoa up astonishingly because Ivory Coast accounts for a large portion of the world supply of cocoa. The reason why Alassane Outtara was to harm the interests of his political rival but he harmed a lot of people worldwide. A political figure should not be able to adjust policies in order to accommodate his/her own personal interests because that is corruption.

Cote d'lvoire's ban on cocoa exports obviously will have an effect on the prices since it produces more than third of the world's cocoa. Supply would be greatly crippled, creating an increase in demand and value as well. It is unfortunate if the government actually did enforce the ban since it's a main source of their revenue. This would probably leave a decrease of its GDP for a quarter due to loss of government revenue, leading to lesser government spending, which wouldn't be a good thing to do, with an exception to reduce the national debt.

This is a perfect example of dis-functioning political and economic system. If a single man has the power to stop all exports of cocoa, this indicates a high level of corruption. The same was true for Egypt and other northern countries of Africa, and we all saw what happened there. I don't think Alassane Ouattara will be continue doing whatever he wants for too long.
