Wizard of Oz Economics

Here is an article summarizing what Goran referred to in class about how the movie The Wizard of Oz could also be seen as an economic parable.

I had never heard about the connections between the Wizard of Oz and the economy in the late 1800s before. The parallels between the characters (the Tinman symbolizes industrial workers, Dorothy is the everyday American, etc.) but like what we discussed in class today, economists can make up stories that fit with theories of the economy somewhat easily. I doubt that Baum sat down to write a childrens story that had an underlying economic message for adults. The economic parable of the Wizard of Oz makes sense, but after reading it I was still wondering.. what do the poppies that put everyone to sleep symbolize??

This is very interesting, and surprisingly a correct analogy between the Wizard of Oz and the economy. I agree with the above post, it's probably very unlikely that Baum planned the children's story to have an underlying economic message.
